Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
feels like a gentle easing into the year.
is the warmest month the data shows.
March sees temperatures ease slightly. It is a kind of transition. The long rains are building, and the air has a heavy, expectant quality. Good conditions overall, though you might catch a few more afternoon showers than in February.
April is the outlier. With 226mm of rainfall, more than four times any other month, this is when Rwanda gets wet. Temperatures stay gentle. But paths through the national parks can turn to mud, and travel between regions becomes more of an adventure. Visitors who come prepared and patient will find Rwanda quieter and in striking bloom.
May marks the tail end of the heavy rains. Rainfall drops back sharply from April's peak, though the landscape is intensely green and the rivers are running full. The cooler nights are a sign that the long dry season is approaching.
June is when Rwanda becomes arguably most itself for visitors: dry, clear-skied, and crisp. This is the start of peak gorilla trekking season, and you'll notice more travellers arriving. Permit availability tightens. Book well ahead.
July continues the dry-season pattern. It's one of the most reliable months in Rwanda for long hikes and clear visibility across the volcanic peaks. The downside is that it's also the busiest, so popular lodges and permits can be hard to come by without advance planning.
August has a slight warmup. Still very much dry season, still excellent for outdoor activities. Rwanda's national parks are at their most accessible this month, and wildlife tracking tends to be productive.
September brings temperatures back, closing out the long dry period. Rainfall stays low. But you might start to feel the season shifting by the end of the month. There's a heaviness in the air, occasional clouds building in the afternoons.
October in Rwanda signals the start of the short rainy season. Temperatures hold steady, and while rainfall is still recorded at the base level in the data, in practice you can expect more frequent showers than the dry months. The landscape begins greening again.
November continues the shoulder-season character: mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and a mix of clear mornings and wetter afternoons. It's comfortable, and the reduced crowds make Rwanda feel more expansive.
December closes the year with conditions similar to January. The festive season brings a slight uptick in visitors from the diaspora and international travellers, so this is less of a "budget window" than it might appear.
