Rwanda sits close enough to the equator that the usual four-season model doesn't quite apply. What you get instead is something more subtle: an almost eerily stable temperature range year-round, broken up by two wet periods and two dry ones, all of it moderated by altitude in ways that surprise first-time visitors who expect tropical heat and find something closer to a cool, highland spring. The altitude is the key to understanding Rwanda's weather. Kigali sits at roughly 1,500 metres above sea level, and much of the country is higher still. The Virunga volcanoes in the northwest push past 4,000 metres. This means that even in the warmest months, you're rarely dealing with the punishing heat of lowland East Africa. Highs tend to hover between 25°C (77°F) and 29°C (84°F), and nights cool off pleasantly to the mid-to-upper teens Celsius. The 70% humidity is noticeable but not oppressive. Expect a damp freshness rather than the wall-of-heat you'd encounter at sea level. What distinguishes Rwanda's calendar most sharply is the rainfall distribution. April is wet. It stands well apart from every other month, with rainfall that can make roads muddy and gorilla-tracking trails slippery. The rest of the year sees relatively modest precipitation. Two shorter rainy spells in the shoulder months can bring daily afternoon showers that tend to roll through quickly rather than settling in for days at a time.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
For beach and relaxation seekers, it's worth noting upfront that Rwanda is landlocked and doesn't have ocean beaches. The shores of Lake Kivu offer a calmer, freshwater alternative that's worth knowing about. That said, the dry season months of June through September are the most comfortable for any kind of outdoor leisure, with the lowest rainfall and reliably mild temperatures around 25°C (77°F).
Cultural
Cultural exploration suits virtually any time of year in Rwanda, though June and July are good. The weather is cooperative, crowds at major sites like the Kigali Genocide Memorial are manageable, and the light has a quality that makes the hills photogenic. January and February also work well. They're drier than the preceding months, with comfortable highs around 27°C (80°F).
Adventure
Adventure and hiking, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, peaks between June and September when the long dry season keeps trails firmer and wildlife more visible. August, with highs around 28°C (82°F) and low rainfall, is typically considered prime. That said, some trackers prefer the shoulder months. You'll find slightly fewer visitors, and the vegetation is lush from recent rains.
Budget
Budget travelers tend to find better value and shorter booking queues in the green seasons. April, despite being Rwanda's wettest month, sees lower demand for gorilla permits and accommodation. If you're flexible and don't mind the rain, it can be a smart window.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Rwanda.

Year-Round Essentials
A light rain jacket or packable poncho
Rain gear is essentially non-negotiable. Even in the dry months, afternoon showers can appear without warning at altitude.
Layers
Layers matter more than most tropical-destination guides suggest. Pack a base layer and a light fleece or thin down jacket for evenings and early-morning gorilla trek departures, when temperatures at elevation can feel cold.
Comfortable, grippy walking shoes
Footwear that can handle both muddy forest trails and Kigali's uneven streets are worth prioritising over anything purely stylish.
High-SPF sun protection
Sunscreen is important. The equatorial sun is strong even when it doesn't feel hot, and altitude reduces atmospheric filtering.
Insect repellent with DEET
is essential for evenings and any time near water.
A reusable water bottle
A reusable water bottle is practical and increasingly appreciated in a country with progressive environmental policies.
During or after the April rains
Clothing
proper waterproof hiking boots
Footwear
proper waterproof hiking boots rather than trail runners
Layering Tip
A light merino wool or synthetic base layer doubles as sleepwear and an early-morning layer without taking up much space. One item, two jobs. It weighs nothing. Pack it first.
The rest of the year
Clothing
trail runners or solid walking shoes
Footwear
trail runners or solid walking shoes suffice for most activities
Layering Tip
A light merino wool or synthetic base layer doubles as sleepwear and an early-morning layer without taking up much space. One item, two jobs. It weighs nothing. Pack it first.
Plug Type
Type C (round two-pin) and Type J (Swiss-style)
Voltage
230V at 50Hz
Adapter Note
North American devices, which run on 120V, will need a voltage converter as well as an adapter, not just an adapter. European devices typically work without conversion. Check the label. Save space. Avoid fried electronics.
Skip These Items
a heavy winter coat (even December nights don't get anywhere near cold enough) sandals as your primary footwear (the combination of uneven terrain and unexpected rain makes them impractical away from a hotel). Bring sturdy shoes. Your feet will thank you. formal business attire unless you have specific meetings (Rwanda's urban dress is smart-casual at most venues). Collared shirt, chinos, done. No tie required. large amounts of single-use plastic. Rwanda's ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags is enforced at the border, so leave those behind. Bring a tote. Respect the rule.

April

April is the outlier. With 226mm of rainfall, more than four times any other month, this is when Rwanda gets wet. Temperatures stay gentle. But paths through the national parks can turn to mud, and travel between regions becomes more of an adventure. Visitors who come prepared and patient will find Rwanda quieter and in striking bloom.

May

May marks the tail end of the heavy rains. Rainfall drops back sharply from April's peak, though the landscape is intensely green and the rivers are running full. The cooler nights are a sign that the long dry season is approaching.

July

July continues the dry-season pattern. It's one of the most reliable months in Rwanda for long hikes and clear visibility across the volcanic peaks. The downside is that it's also the busiest, so popular lodges and permits can be hard to come by without advance planning.
