Rwanda Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Information last reviewed June 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Rwanda keeps its borders open with a liberal visa policy. Citizens of most African and Commonwealth countries walk in visa-free; everyone else secures an e-visa or ETA online ahead of the flight.
Nationals of select countries may enter Rwanda without prior visa arrangements.
Entry is granted at the port of entry. Make sure your passport still has at least one blank visa page.
Travelers whose passports do not qualify for visa-free entry must secure an e-visa before they land.
Cost: USD 50 single entry, USD 70 multiple entry, payable by Visa/Mastercard
Print the approval letter; a mobile screenshot also passes. Transit e-visas (72 hours) cost less.
A narrow list of nationalities still has to apply for a visa through a Rwandan embassy before leaving home.
The roster of visa-required countries is short and can shift; double-check the latest list on irembo.gov.rw.
Arrival Process
Arriving passengers move through immigration, baggage claim and customs in one flow-controlled hall at KGL. Land-border posts follow the same order in smaller buildings.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Carry the child's passport and, if only one parent is traveling, a notarized letter of consent from the parent who stays behind. A birth certificate can be requested for verification.
Secure an import permit from Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Board (RAB) at least 10 days before arrival. Pets need a rabies vaccination certificate issued 30 days to 12 months before travel and a veterinary health certificate from the country of origin.
Tourist e-visas can be extended once for 30 days at the Directorate of Immigration in Kigali (KG 7 Avenue). Bring your passport, two photos, and pay a modest fee. Work or study permits require sponsorship from a Rwandan entity and must be applied for before the tourist visa expires.
