Rwanda Entry Requirements

Rwanda Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed June 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Rwanda greets most travelers at Kigali International Airport (KGL) and at land crossings with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The entry checklist is short: a passport valid for six months, an approved visa or visa exemption, and proof of yellow-fever vaccination if you are flying in from an endemic zone. Immigration at Kigali moves fast, count on 20-30 minutes during the morning rush and even less after 6 p.m. Overland, gates open 6 a.m., 6 p.m.; budget an extra hour for paperwork, at Gatuna (Uganda) and Rusumo (Tanzania). Before departure, lock down your visa type, print the e-visa approval, and rehearse concise answers to the usual arrival questions, purpose of visit and the address of your first night's lodging.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Rwanda keeps its borders open with a liberal visa policy. Citizens of most African and Commonwealth countries walk in visa-free; everyone else secures an e-visa or ETA online ahead of the flight.

Visa-Free Entry
90 days within any 12-month period

Nationals of select countries may enter Rwanda without prior visa arrangements.

Includes
Kenya Uganda Tanzania South Africa United States United Kingdom Germany Canada Australia Singapore Mauritius Hong Kong (SAR) EAC Partner States

Entry is granted at the port of entry. Make sure your passport still has at least one blank visa page.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
30 days single entry or 90 days multiple entry

Travelers whose passports do not qualify for visa-free entry must secure an e-visa before they land.

Includes
India China Russia Brazil Mexico Philippines Nigeria Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates
How to Apply: File the application at irembo.gov.rw; upload the passport bio-page and a passport-style photo. Approval usually arrives within 3, 5 working days.
Cost: USD 50 single entry, USD 70 multiple entry, payable by Visa/Mastercard

Print the approval letter; a mobile screenshot also passes. Transit e-visas (72 hours) cost less.

Visa Required
30 or 90 days depending on visa granted

A narrow list of nationalities still has to apply for a visa through a Rwandan embassy before leaving home.

How to Apply: Hand over your passport, completed form, flight itinerary and proof of accommodation to the nearest Rwandan embassy or high commission.

The roster of visa-required countries is short and can shift; double-check the latest list on irembo.gov.rw.

Arrival Process

Arriving passengers move through immigration, baggage claim and customs in one flow-controlled hall at KGL. Land-border posts follow the same order in smaller buildings.

1
Immigration Control
Show your passport and either the visa-free stamp page or the printed e-visa approval to the immigration officer. Expect biometric fingerprints and a quick facial photo.
2
Baggage Claim
Carousel delivery is swift, bags appear within 15 minutes of deplaning. Trolleys are free. Porters appreciate a small tip in Rwandan Francs.
3
Customs Channel
Pick the green channel if you have nothing to declare, or the red channel if you do. Random bag checks happen. Keep receipts ready for high-value electronics.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid six months beyond your intended departure from Rwanda.
e-Visa Approval or Visa-Free Entry Proof
Printed or PDF on phone. Officers may scan the QR code.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Use the Diplomatic/Residents line only if you hold an East African passport or a diplomatic visa. Everyone else will be waved back.
Write down the exact address of your Kigali hotel. Immigration officers type it straight into their system.
SIM cards are on sale 24/7 in the arrivals area, grab one before you exit the secure hall so you can arrange transport.
