Common Scams to Avoid
Unofficial porters at Kigali International Airport sometimes insist on carrying bags a few metres and then demand inflated tips. Politely decline any unsolicited help and only use clearly identified airport staff if you need assistance.
Taxi touts inside the arrivals hall may quote fares several times the metered rate by claiming the meter is 'broken' or that fixed prices are mandatory. Walk past them to the official taxi rank outside where drivers use the meter or agree a fair fare before boarding.
Currency-exchange booths in the baggage-claim area sometimes advertise 'no commission' yet give rates far below the mid-market figure. Compare the offered rate with the live rate on your phone and, if it is poor, wait to exchange at a bank or ATM in town.
