This compact city serves as the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, making it synonymous with mountain gorilla trekking, though there's more to it than just that famous wildlife encounter. The town itself has a practical, no-nonsense feel - it's clearly built around serving travelers heading into the mountains, but you'll find genuine Rwandan life happening alongside the tourism infrastructure. What strikes most visitors is how the landscape dominates everything here. The volcanic peaks loom over the city, and on clear mornings, the views are genuinely spectacular. While most people use Musanze as a base for gorilla trekking, the surrounding area offers enough to keep you busy for several days if you're not rushing off to the next destination.
