The park has been remarkably restored and now hosts lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and numerous antelope species. Practical Information

Getting Around

Hire a private car with driver for maximum flexibility, especially for the Akagera day trip. Kigali has motorcycle taxis (motos) and car taxis available through apps, but for visiting memorial sites and the national park, a full-day vehicle rental is essential. Roads in Rwanda are generally excellent. The drive to Akagera takes approximately 2.5 hours each way on paved roads. Within Kigali, motos are the fastest way to navigate traffic, though regular taxis offer more comfort.

Book Ahead

Book Akagera National Park entry 1-2 days ahead, especially during peak season. Reserve boat safari on Lake Ihema in advance. Arrange vehicle rental with driver for Day 2 at least one day prior.

Packing Essentials

Binoculars for wildlife viewing, sun protection, light layers for early mornings, comfortable walking shoes, camera with zoom lens, reusable water bottle, modest clothing for memorial sites, insect repellent

Total Budget

$420-560 for 2 days (excluding international flights and accommodation)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stay in budget guesthouses or hostels in Kigali ($20-30/night), use motorcycle taxis for city transport, join a group tour to Akagera to split costs ($80-100 per person), pack your own meals, and skip the boat safari. Focus on free activities like parks and walking tours. Total budget can be reduced to $120-150 per day.

Luxury Upgrade

Stay at five-star hotels in Kigali with spa facilities, book a private guided tour with a professional naturalist for Akagera, upgrade to the premium lodges within or adjacent to the park for an overnight stay, add a helicopter transfer to the park, include spa treatments and fine dining experiences. Consider extending to include gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Budget increases to $500-800+ per day.

Family-Friendly

Choose family-friendly guesthouses with pools in Kigali, adjust memorial site visits based on children's ages (consider skipping for very young children), pack entertainment for the long drive to Akagera, bring snacks and activities for game drives, focus on the boat safari which children often find more engaging, visit Sanitas Leisure Park Kanombe for recreational activities, and allow for more frequent breaks and flexible timing throughout the itinerary.
